Lake Aygr is located in the Ararat region of Armenia, in the Ararat valley, 30 km far from Yerevan, at an altitude of 970 m above sea level. Aygr is the lowest lake in Armenia. The surface of the lake is 7.2 hectares, the maximum depth is 10 m. The Metsamor (Sevadjur) River originates from the lake. The peculiarity of the lake is that it is fed by underground waters, so the water in it is cold, transparent and tasty. It is considered that Lake Aygr is a part of the old bed of the Araks River. The lake is surrounded by a forest, where plane-trees, oaks and poplars grow. The lake is especially attractive in the hot summer months, when the air temperature reaches 36-38 degrees, the cool water and wonderful beaches turn the lake into a wonderful place for rest.
There are some legends connected with the origin of the lake's name. According to one of them, many fiery horses, white buffalos, human-fish and other animals lived in the lake. They say that one day, when the mare of legendary ruler Kyorogli was grazing on the shore of Lake Metsamor, a fiery white stallion- aygr (in Armenian, "aygr" means "breeding stallion") jumped out of the lake and jumped on the mare, then disappeared under the water again. After that, the lake was called Lake Aygr.
