This time we offer a saturated tour to Sisian. The first point of the tour is Qarahunj (Stonehange) or Zorats Karer. The complex is located in the vicinity of the city of Sisian. This mysterious place attracts thousands of tourists. Here, about 223 basalt monoliths are located vertically in a certain order and in the form of a circle in an area of 7-8 hectares. The stones (menhirs) were brought from a quarry located in the gorge of the nearby river Dar and, apparently, were lifted and installed by means of pack animals. Holes were made in some stones, which, according to some scholars, were intended for the ropes allowing to transport the stones.

However, it is impossible not to notice that the holes are made with great care. At the same time, the corners of 84 stones (the total number of stones is 223) are directed to different points in the space. Therefore, it is nor excluded that the ancient stones are not just tombstones in a vast burial place, but the equipment for astronomical observations.

It should be noted that there are “horned” stones in the complex, which are similar to rams or headless animals, and the sun rises just in the middle of the horns. There is an assumption that for example stone N63 presented sundials. According to the popular belief, menhirs are petrified women and girls, after touching them the enemies died.

The next stop is Shaki waterfall, which is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Armenia. The place, where the waterfall is located, is a deep gorge with many rocks and caves, where the traces of the activities of an ancient man have been found.

Then we will visit Sisavank Monastery, Vorotnavank Monasgtery and see the Tangu bridge. Vorotnavank (Vaghadni Monastery) is one of the remarkable monuments of the Syunik school of the Armenian architecture. The monastery dates back to X-XI centuries. and consists of the churches of St. Gregory, St. Stepanos, St. Karapet, porches, porticos, a monastery hotel and outbuildings, as well as walls and cemeteries.

The Tangu bridge was built by Tangu Melik in 1855 on the Vorotan River in the gorge located below the ruins of Vorotnaberd (Vorotan fortress).

In Sisian, we will also see the Church of St. Hripsime in Tolors village built in 1861, as well as the Tolors reservoir, which was put into operation in 1976. After the construction of the reservoir, the village and the church remained under water. The church that has gone under the water of the Tolors reservoir is one of the few churches that “come out” to the surface for 1-2 months a year. The rest of the time, the church remains in water, because after heavy rainfall, the water level in the reservoir rises.
