Overview

Program:

  • House-Museum of  Brothers Orbeli
  • Monastery complex of Kecharis in Tsakhkadzor (11-13 centuries)
  • Ropeway in Tsaghkadzor
  • Reservoir in Hankavan
  • Greek church in Hankavan (19th century)
  • Hot mineral springs in Hankavan (pool)

We will start this unique tour from the cold mountains of Tsaghkadzor and finish it with the hot mineral springs of Hankavan.

The first stop of the tour is the resort-town Tsaghkadzor. In Tsaghkadzor we will visit the house-museum of Brothers Orbeli, we will have free time, and those who wish can travel by the ropeway.

Here we will also visit the Monastery Complex Kecharis (Ejaris, Kecharuyk, Darachichak Monastery, etc.). The monastery is harmoniously connected with the surrounding nature. It consists of four churches, a gavit-porch, chapels and about three dozens of khachkars (cross-stones) dated back to the 11th-17th centuries. The monastery complex was established by the efforts of  Princes Pahlavuni and Proshyan (Khaghbakyan) in the XI-XIII centuries. Kecharis was one of the major cultural and spiritual centers of medieval Armenia. Talented politicians and philosophers Grigor Magistros Pahlavuni, Prince Vasak Khaghbakyan, architect Vetsik, monk and poet Khachatur Kecharetsi and others lived and worked here. Kecharis was also one of the manuscript centers: several dozens of Armenian manuscripts written and copied here have been preserved.

On our way we will also stop and take photos near the picturesque Hankavar reservoir.

In Hankavan we will have a rest and have dinner in a pavilion.

Our next stop is the Greek church, which can be considered as one of the symbols of Hankavan., 250 Greeks lived in Hankavan village in 1989. Today, only three Greek families remain here. Hankavan cemetery of the XIX-XX centuries is an evidence of the large number of Greeks living here once. However, the St. George Church built in 1850-1890 is the most striking evidence of the Greek trace here.

And, finally, the last point of the tour program is the hot mineral springs in Hankavan. Those who wish can swim in the pool of a hot mineral spring or relax in the forest. The hot waters of the Hankavan mineral spring originate in the gorge of the Marmarik River. The mineral waters of Hankavan contain chloride-sodium-calcium-magnesium compounds: thanks to this unique composition, they contribute to the activation of regenerative processes in the body. The healing waters of Hankavan are indicated for gastrointestinal diseases and metabolic disorders.
