2 day:
We will start the second day with visiting to the Zhinvali reservoir, one of the most beautiful and picturesque artificial reservoirs in Georgia, which is located on the territory of the Dusheti region, 40 km far from Tbilisi. The reservoir was built on the Aragvi River in 1984. The reservoir was called in honor to the ancient town of Zhinvali, which appeared in these places in the second half of the 12th century, during the reign of Queen Tamara, and under King George V the Brilliant it became one of the largest political and commercial centers of Georgia. In the early 1980s the inhabitants of Zhinvali and other settlements were resettled, and a new settlement was built next to the reservoir, which was called in honor to the flooded ancient town. Many historical monuments and ancient temples remained under water, including the Jvari Patiosani Church dated back to the 12th century. This church is still seen today in spring, when the water level in the reservoir decreases, a large cross first appears on the surface of the reservoir, and then the entire temple.
The medieval Ananuri fortress is located just on the shore of the Zhinvali reservoir. It was built in the 16th-17th centuries for the protection of the surrounding lands from the Darial Gorge. Only a part of the fortress wall, a watchtower and three churches located on the territory of the citadel have survived from the once impregnable fortress up to this day. The ancient Georgian Military Road runs along the picturesque shore of the reservoir, mountains covered with juniper groves, deciduous and pine forests surround the reservoir from all the sides. The turquoise water of the Zhinvali reservoir, the beauty of the surrounding mountains, undiscovered secrets and priceless treasures hidden under the water are attractive at any season of the year.
The next stop of the tour is Gori town, one of the oldest towns in Georgia. Gori got its name from a rock formation (goraki) located in the center of the town. The ruins of the medieval Goristsikhe fortress are located on this rock.
Gori gained worldwide fame thanks to Iosif Stalin, who was born in this area. Here we will visit Stalin's house-museum, which contains the elements reflecting all the aspects of the leader's life. The museum exhibits documents, letters, photographs of Stalin, his personal belongings, busts of the leader made of various materials and other items. The museum also has a special exhibit - Stalin's armored wagon.
Uplistsikhe Cave town is located not far from Gori. The ancient town is carved in the rock on the bank of the Kura River. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that this cave town, which has a 3000-year history, was left only in the 19th century. People have lived there for so long. Now the Uplistsikhe caves are the sites protected by UNESCO.
